Re-Birth Octet was formed in 2021 by Brighton based musician Chris Coull, and plays a tribute to Miles Davis' seminal album The Birth of the Cool, which saw the dawn of the cool-school / West coast jazz era of the 1950’s.

The two baritones - Tony Kofi and Hannah Horton. Both multi sax players dedicating this show to the largest and rarest of the saxophone family; the baritone sax!

John Crawford is one of the finest Latin/Jazz pianists on the scene, and brings impressive technique and musicianship to his blend of jazz, flamenco and Latin.

Roger Beaujolais started playing vibraphone aged 24, and is completely self-taught. He is a prolific writer with over 250 tunes recorded & released over the years. He has played alongside many of the top jazz musicians in the UK including Jim Mullen, Denys Baptiste, Alan Barnes, Tony Kofi, Tommaso Starace, and many more.

Best known as an outstanding scat singer, Anita Wardell is also a skilled writer and performer of vocalese, and a sensitive interpreter of standards and jazz originals. She’s collected several awards, including a recent prize for Best Jazz Vocalist from the British Jazz Awards.

Since winning the BBC Young Jazz Musician competition in 2018, 23-year-old Birmingham-born tenor saxophonist Xhosa Cole has become one of the hottest properties in British jazz.

A return of Scott Hamilton and his regular Quartet to Chichester, as part of his January 2023 visit to the UK.

This sextet plays post-bop tunes from a golden era of jazz, including some from the 1959 album 'The Cannonball Adderley Quintet in Chicago', re-released in 1964 as 'Cannonball and Coltrane' and John Coltrane's album 'Blue Train' from 1957.

Simpatico husband and wife projects are a rarity – which is why the partnership of Judith and Dave O’Higgins is particularly notable.

This performance is based on their album released in 2020 that includes three new originals and three “greatest hits” from their two-tenor book, honed over a few years of gigs, with the pair backed by a hard-swinging UK trio of Graham Harvey (piano), Jeremy Brown (bass) and Josh Morrison (drums).

Nigel Price is one of the most highly regarded and in demand guitarists on the UK jazz scene today. He spent three years with UK funk legends - the James Taylor Quartet, and was a member of acid jazz band “The Filthy Six” for 10 years. He was voted best guitarist at the 2016 British Jazz Awards and his organ trio was voted “Jazz ensemble of the year” at the 2010 Parliamentary Jazz Awards.

A project by Tommaso Starace which features some of his favourite jazz standards and tunes that include a variety of styles of music from past to present composers and not only confined to the Jazz tradition, including music by Charlie Parker, Sam Jones, Bobby Timmons, Chick Corea, Michel Petrucciani but also by composers such as Ennio Morricone, StevieWonder, Pino Daniele.

Paul Higgs presents an evening of tunes by the legendary

trumpet players, Clifford Brown and Blue Mitchell and

their exploration of the Hard Bop and Bebop styles. Both

had a great soulful lyricism and a sense of melody.

A wonderful sextet of quality musicians brought together to mark the CJC’s 30th anniversary! The concert is also featured in the Festival of Chichester events.

Roberto Bossard is coming from Switzerland and our concert is part of their European tour, going on to Paris.

Vasilis will be performing his Dexterity project celebrating the music and spirit of the legendary American saxophonist Dexter Gordon and features some of his less known original compositions.

Saxophonist, and rising star of UK jazz Hannah Horton released her brand new album ‘Inside Out’ on September 22nd to a full house at the intimate 606 Jazz Club.

Charlotte Glasson is an award winning composer and band leader playing a multitude of instruments from saxophone, penny whistle, violin and even the music saw.

Rob Luft is a rising star: an award-winning 28-year-old jazz guitarist from London whose virtuosity has been compared to that of legends John McLaughlin, Al Di Meola & Paco De Lucia.

A welcome return of the Karen Sharp Quartet to the CJC.

 This promises to be a programme full of good jazz, humour and Christmas cheer.

The dancing exuberance of South African Township music, the convivial groove of gospel-influenced soul jazz, the joyful sway of Cuban guaguanco rhythms, the bluesy melodies of middle eastern praise songs and so much more all come together in pianist Philip Clouts’ superbly accomplished quartet.

A special quartet created by Winston Clifford to open our new post-covid Season.

It is quite a while since Freddie was at CJC so it is a delight to have him return to play the wonderful music of Clifford Brown. A graduate of the Royal Academy of Music and the National Youth Jazz Orchestra, he rose to prominence through the John Dankworth Orchestra and has been a member of the Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Orchestra for ten years.

Julian Costello plays tenor and soprano saxophones and is a graduate of Trinity College of Music. He composes the music for the Julian Costello Quartet and recently released an album called Transitions on 33Jazz Records which received excellent reviews in Europe and the USA and is frequently played on radio stations across Europe including a live in session and interview for the BBC.

After graduating in composition at the Royal Northern College of Music, Karen discovered a love of jazz and was inspired to play tenor sax by two giants of improvisation - Dexter Gordon and Sonny Rollins.

John Law is one of the UK's most imaginative jazz pianists and is known mainly for his and indie material (Beatles, Radiohead, Adele, Daft Punk). John Law has created a band which plays highly accessible melodic music and recognised tunes in extremely creative and interactive arrangements, simple and complex, with an emphasis on spontaneous interaction in a group of highly versatile young musicians.

After their last terrific performance three years ago, Tommaso and pianist Michele Di Toro reunite at Chichester Jazz Club. This time they team up with Russian virtuoso bass player Yuri Goloubev.

Internationally renowned double bassist Danny Moss Jnr is an unashamed disciple of the great Ray Brown. Time, tone, swing and variation of lines depending on the soloist are the hallmark of his playing. Danny’s propulsive lines and ‘long note’ style have earned him a considerable reputation in jazz circles.

This highly acclaimed concert celebrates the traditional hot jazz music of Louisiana born clarinettist Edmond Hall. The show features leading UK clarinet star Adrian Cox.

Peter Jones is a well - established jazz singer based in London who gigs regularly at jazz clubs there and throughout the south-east. His three albums to date have received excellent reviews, with tracks played widely on many radio stations in the UK and overseas. 

In this show, trumpeter Paul Higgs presents a musical tour of the history of jazz, playing hits by the legendary greats - Bix Beiderbecke, Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Gillespie, Chet Baker, and Miles Davis, among others. He takes you from the early styles of New Orleans, swing and bebop, through to cool jazz, modal and Latin.

This gig will be part of a 40-plus date autumn tour promoting their new CD, O’Higgins and
Luft play Monk and Trane (Ubuntu Music 2019) As an established giant of the UK jazz scene,
Dave O’Higgins’ tenor and soprano sax sounds are highly personal and recognisable and this will be his 21st CD as leader.

A fitting finale to our 2018-19 Season. The always popular Alan Barnes brings his swinging sextet to the CJC. The repertoire is wide ranging and varied with classics, originals and standards.

Gary Crosby OBE is a leading jazz double bassist, music arranger and educator in the UK. He is the Founder and Artistic Director of Tomorrow's Warriors.

The Matt Ridley Quintet has established itself as "One of Britain's very finest contemporary quintets" (Jazzviews).

London born Zoe Francis started singing while living in New York for a few years, attending the workshops of Barry Harris and jam sessions in Harlem, Brooklyn and Manhattan, before singing on her own gigs with musicians including Harry Allen, Howard Alden and Warren Vaché. 

Two highly talented brothers who rarely get to play together, now with an exciting new project of swinging creative jazz. Gabriel Garrick took up the trumpet aged seven and started gigging at an early age with his father and older brother.

The beloved comic actor Dudley Moore (1935 - 2002) was also one of the UK’s most dazzling, swinging jazz pianists and composer of wit and depth. 

Following their epic performances with the CJC 25th Anniversary All Stars in 2017, Tommaso and Dave decided to work together on a unique project.

In his live shows Remi plays an eclectic mix of original compositions, improvisations, jazz standards and new arrangements of music from Django Reinhardt, Jimi Hendrix, Wes Montgomery, Charlie Parker, Peter Green and many more. 

This is a very welcome return visit of Scott and his Quartet, but on this occasion we have brought him back with Alan Barnes with whom he recorded some nine years ago. 

Enrico Tomasso was exposed to the best of jazz from birth and started playing the trumpet at the age of five.

Well known and loved by audiences throughout the south, Jo has not been to CJC since 2014 when she played the first concert following her then well publicised serious illness. Her return will be warmly welcomed. 

Over a career spanning 25 years, award-winning guitarist, Nigel Price has become widely acknowledged as one of the hardest-working musicians in the business.

Juliet Kelly is one of UK jazz’s hidden treasures and for this special performance, alongside her regular pianist Jennifer Carr and bassist Oli Hayhurst, Juliet is joined by CJC favourite Tommaso Starace. 

The quartet performs the music of one of the most successful and influential jazz groups of the 20th century, the Modern Jazz Quartet.

For the first concert of the season, and our contribution to the "Bernstein in Chichester Festival", we present the Darius Brubeck Quartet.
