The idea of Karen Sharp, tenor and baritone sax, Steve Waterman, trumpet and flugelhorn, Gareth Williams, piano, Arnie Somogyi, bass and Rod Youngs, drums created much anticipation of a great session.
The concert really got going with a rendering of Dexter Gordon’s Hank Panky demonstrating the powerful sound of this Quintet, followed by an interesting and varied set if tunes. The second set was most enjoyable, beginning with my favourite 'Whisper Not' by Benny Golson, then a piece written by Steve called ‘Welshcake’ based on the chords of Dexter Gordon’s ‘Cheesecake’, followed by another of Steve’s compositions, ‘Darrel’s Waltz’ featuring him on flugelhorn. The fascinating selection was completed with a John Scofield tune based on the chords of ‘There Will Never Be Another You’ called ‘Not You Again’.
Another well attended evening of fine jazz.
