The Power of 3

Tommaso Starace – alto sax, Jim Watson – piano, Danny Moss – double bass.

It was good to hear Tommaso in a trio setting, playing jazz standards that he particularly enjoys and giving full reign to his improvisational talents. Combined with this were the sometimes-explosive skills of the wonderful pianist Jim Watson providing some sizzling solos with Tommaso throughout the two sets, making it a stimulating concert.  The evening began with ‘Del Sasser’, a tune long associated with Cannonball Adderley, followed by Duke Ellington’s ‘Caravan’ and continuing in this vein with great tunes such as ‘Autumn In New York', Horace Silver’s ‘Nica’s Dream’, ‘Brazilian Like’ by Michel Petrucciani and Charlie parker’s ‘Passport’.

This was to be the penultimate concert for Tommaso in the UK, who leaves to begin a new phase of his life living in Spain before the end of this month. However, we look forward to him visiting us again in the years to come, perhaps with some Spanish musicians!  This was another memorable occasion to savour.
