Karen Sharp Quartet

Friday 21 Jan 2022

Karen Sharp Quartet with John Pierce on piano, Dave Green on bass and Steve Brown drums.

With nearly a full house, the evening began Cole Porter’s ‘Ev'rything I love’ with Karen on tenor, then switching to baritone for Monks ‘Ask Me Now’. Continuing on baritone we were given a beautiful ballad rendering of ‘I’ll Close My Eyes’ with John featured on piano. Switching back to tenor sax, we heard ‘Lady Luck’ a tune by Thad Jones from her recent album “Another Place”, based on the changes of ‘Taking a Chance of Love’ and rounding off the first half with a blues. The second set began with ‘Interplay’ by Bill Evans and continued with the Lee Konitz tune ‘Thingin’, another contrafact, based on ‘All the Things You Are’, also from Karen’s latest album. Following ‘Ghost of a Chance’ we were treated to a piece featuring Dave Green on bass in the form of the Ron Carter composition Little Waltz, which also brought us the most beautifully sensitive solo from Karen and rounding off the concert of accessible great jazz with Vierd Blues by Miles. It was a joy to hear Karen in fine form on both saxes so ably supported by arguably the best and certainly the most experienced rhythm section around today. A wonderful evening thoroughly enjoyed by all.
