Rob Luft Trio
Rob Luft – Guitar
Meirko Scarcia – Double Bass
Corrie Dick – Drums
The evening began earlier than usual with a well-received student group from the University of Chichester called ‘Spacelight’, a quartet of alto sax, keyboard, bass guitar and drums playing standards and a couple of originals. It was good to have students back at our venue. We look forward to this continuing.
Following this, an evening of beautiful jazz presented by a virtuoso of the guitar with his trio, Corrie Dick, drums and Meirko Scarcia brilliantly deputising on bass, playing tunes from an interesting range of genres, including Monk’s ‘Green Chimneys’ to ‘Jegue’, which means donkey in Portuguese by Brazilian multi-instrumentalist Hermeto Pascoal, to ‘African Flowers’ from Ellington’s ‘Money Jungle’ trio album with Roach and Mingus to Victor Young’s film music ‘Delilah’ and on to ‘Send In The Clown which morphed into Bill Frisell’s ‘Verona’. Following a fascinating story about Rob's visit to the Cairo Jazz Festival during Covid leading to a six-month stay in Egypt, we heard a piece based on 14th century Islamic music from that part of the world and the evening finished with ‘Berlin’, inspired by German Techno music.
A privilege to experience a relaxing yet stimulating evening of guitar virtuosity.
