Philip Clouts Quartet

Friday 15 Oct 2021

Philip Clouts – piano, Samuel Eagles - alto sax, Tim Fairhall – bass, Ted Carrasco – drums.

This evening of South African inspired jazz was an absolute delight and introduced a talented group of musicians previously unknown to most of the members and was enthusiastically received. Starting with a new Latin original ‘Tilt’ followed by a really swinging ‘West Hill’. As the evening progressed, we were treated to a variety of rhythms, I particularly enjoyed ‘Direction South’ using Cape jazz/reggae rhythm. Although most of the pieces were from Philips’s writings, we also heard the standards ‘Have You met Miss Jones’ and Horace Silver’s ‘Song for My Father’ providing an interesting musical reference for the unique sound of this Quartet. The empathy between the musicians allowed them to improvise with some beautiful solos within the framework of this music.

A return visit in a future season seems more than likely.
