Charlotte Glasson – Tenor & soprano sax, flute, melodica, pennywhistle, 5 string violin and saw.
Mark Bassey – Trombone
Chris Kibble – Piano
Lloyd Coote – Sousaphone, double bass
Multi-instrumentalist Charlotte started the evening on tenor sax in a New Orleans vibe but then moved on to her own ‘Early Bird Tango’, the tune ‘Stelata’ named after the magnolia for her aunt in Australia which included a solo on the Medolica. The set continued ‘Ballad for a lost Son’ with moving solos from Chris on piano and Mark on trombone. The first set finished with ‘Yams’ a tune based on the chords of ‘You Are My Sunshine' with Charlotte on flute and Sam with a brush solo. After the interval, we enjoyed a solo piece with Charlotte providing some vocal percussion wizardry, with a little electronic help, whilst playing tenor, soprano and flute! This was followed by ‘Bonito’, the name of Frida Kahlo’s parrot, on soprano. We also heard ‘Someday Soon’ in memory of Charlotte’s parent's Golden Wedding. ‘Six Steps Home’ was a rhythmic audience participation piece with two penny whistles. Changing the mood came Ellington’s ‘Black and Tan Fantasy’ back on tenor and finishing with ‘Comin’ Home Baby’ on flute evoking memories of Herbie Mann, with a hint of Roland Kirk, but then changing to a 5 string violin and finally the bow used on a saw.
It was a great fun evening enjoyed by all who attended.
