This was perhaps the first time that CJC have included a male jazz singer in their varied programme. What a fine singer Peter Jones proved to be, with a first class backing group of Vasilis Xenopoulos on tenor sax and flute, Anthony Kerr on vibes, Adrian York on piano, Andy Hamill on bass and Matt Skeaping drums.
Peter is a long-time fan of the great Mark Murphy, not only singing several of his songs, but he has also written Mark’s biography. However, the selection also included some of his own compositions together with several well-known melodies like ‘Alone Together’, Tad Dameron’s ‘If You Could See Me Now’, and ‘Let’s Get Lost’, Chet Baker’s signature tune. We were also treated to some truly beautiful solos by the instrumentalist, with Anthony’s use of both the two and four mallet techniques demonstrated to perfection, together with some eloquent lyrical tenor from Vasilis, enabling us to identify seamlessly integrated quotes along the way.
Yet another evening of top quality jazz, to be savoured and remembered.
