Alan Barnes and Bruce Adams Sextet

Friday 28 Jun 2019

What a great offering for the Chichester Festival and finale to the CJC 2018-19 season.

Alan Barnes brought along his Sextet with Bruce Adams, Robert Fowler, Robin Aspland, Simon Thorpe and Clarke Tracey and played a fine selection 70 year old Modern Jazz. Starting off with tunes by Harry Edison, Cannonball Adderley [No.13] and Duke Ellington’s The Mooch. We even had Bruce playing the trumpet and flugelhorn at the same time! The second set continued with Alan’s composition ‘Mr TC’ which was followed up with a rapid ‘Hollywood Stampede’, which we were told, was based on ‘Sweet Georgia Brown’. A couple of beautiful slow numbers, Hoagy Carmichael’s Skylark and Neil Hefti’s Lil Darlin’ provided good balance and we finished with ‘Spontaneous Combustion’.

With the distribution of the new CJC programme for next season, it was good to see Alan and Bruce will be with us again same time next year.
