A repertoire, rather than a tribute band, Scenes in the City, fronted by leading UK double bassist Arnie Somogyi, combines the talent of some of the UK's best jazz musicians.
Arnie Somogyi's first jazz record was Mingus' 'Ah Um'. Unknown to him, a connection to one of the most colourful figures in jazz had occurred years earlier when Arnie's Dad shared a urinal at Ronnie Scott's with the bass legend.
In October 2013 events came full circle when Arnie was asked to step into Mingus’ shoes in the official New York-based Mingus Big Band when their regular bassist was unable to make the gig.
Initially wary of taking on Mingus' music with his own band, Arnie eventually bit the bullet as a special fundraiser for Sheffield Jazz. The musicians and audience enjoyed it so much that he decided to extend the band beyond a one-off gig.
Drawing its playlist from the music of Charles Mingus, the band embodies the freedom of interpretation and drive that characterises the music of one of the most important and colourful figures in jazz.
Playing a mix of familiar favourites and lesser known Mingus compositions, this star studded line-up includes some of the leading figures in British jazz today. We should expect passion and fireworks from the front line, ably pushed on by one of the best rhythm sections around.
Line-up: Arnie Somogyi – bass, Tony Kofi - saxophones, Alan Barnes – saxophones, Jeremy Price – trombone, Mark Edwards – piano, Clark Tracey - drums.
All meetings start at 7.45pm - doors open at 6.30pm
