In their inimitable freewheeling way, fifty years ago Gerry Mulligan and Paul Desmond recorded wonderful interpretations of great jazz standards, as featured on their recordings Blues in Time and Two of a Mind.
And it is this music which inspires alto saxophonist Allison Neale and Chris Biscoe on baritone saxophone to call their album Two of a Mind.
Chris is self taught, starting on saxophone and then alto clarinet. He played with Ben Sidran at Sussex University. After experience of modern, fusion and free jazz he played with Red Brass and worked with Mike Westbrook.
American born altoist Allison Neale’s playing is in the spirit of Paul Desmond and Art Pepper with whom she has a particular affinity. She has performed alongside leading international artists such as Adelaide Hall and Bud Shank and more recently tenorist Scott Hamilton as well as featuring in both the Johnny Dankworth ‘Generations‘ Band and the ‘Back to Basie’ Orchestra.
On this visit, the group are incorporating an additional voice with the guitar of Colin Oxley who can draw on a vast experience of musical settings which include being featured with Stacey Kent, Scott Hamilton and Michael Garrick.
Some of the music tonight uses arrangements from the original recordings, but there are also new compositions and arrangements by Chris and Allison as well as opportunities to incorporate alto clarinet and flute into the improvisations.
Jeremy Brown - bass and Stu Butterfield - drums, complete the line-up.
All meetings start at 7.45pm - doors open at 6.30pm
